Golf champion and sportswoman Annika Sorenstam has now introduced her signature fragrance simply called Annika, available from www.annikafragrance.com (see earlier announcement for more "historic" details and read about her wine project as well). About the perfume, "Marking the first time a professional female golfer has launched a signature fragrance, ANNIKA by Annika Sorenstam will particularly appeal to golf enthusiasts, career-minded professionals and active, fashion-forward women. Like Annika, the fragrance will be casually elegant and unpretentious."...

La Nuit de L'Homme by Yves Saint Laurent is the latest men's fragrance to be issued by a brand that has shown in the past that it could create some fascinating masculine compositions even and especially when you were not necessarily going to wear them. But at least scents such as Kouros and M7 made you, arguably, pay attention and L'Homme is, for all of its popularity, somewhat edgy. The new La Nuit de l'Homme (The Night of the Man) on the other hand is safe, oh-so-safe a launch in a time of recession and a big let-down in terms of creativity although it can still pretend to the designation of " sent-bon" (a smell-good scent), undeniably and unsatisfactorily so. Three obstacles were not surmounted it seems: 1) being an interesting flanker 2) being a celebrity scent that made sense when compared to the person embodying it 3) managing to add a big dose of warm oriental amber without losing all of its edge as that scent is so round and skin-friendly. To refresh our memories we can turn again to the original L'Homme which I reviewed last week and which reveals itself to be a much more interesting concept with its central duetto of bilge and
florals, like a gentler, more pastel version of Sécrétions Magnifiques.
Its transparent fruity undertones, including a trace of cool cucumber, make for a
more complex, aerial blend than LNDLH. Although on a blotter the new
La Nuit de L'Homme seemed in the first moments to project a stronger personality than its progenitor, on the longer run
it turns out to be a more mechanical and conventional version of a
masculine perfume. It is the difference between showing off and imparting a smidgeon of inner life to your perfume. The obvious structural difference to my perception is that the new
flanker went by a pattern, re-utilizing, the skeleton of L'Homme but
emptying it of its inspiration and originality and decided to
incorporate a twist. That new element is noteworthy in and of itself, or
rather noticeable, but creativity was very limited. La Nuit de l'Homme is a true commercial flanker,
unlike, for example the very personal Kelly Calèche EDP 2009 which is
based on a perfumer's leitmotivs and feels authentic using the flanker
category as a vehicle for personal variations rather than appearing to think in
terms of mechanically applied "codes". You know when you read the word "code" all over the
place that the marketing forces had a heavy hand in the design of the
scent and in this case the perfumers complied, a little too obediently. If sometimes, you are delighted to find the perfumer(s) using a secret language in her or his composition to say something a little more interesting than found in the official spiel, here it looks like they went by the marketing book. The trio of noses are the same ones that worked on L'Homme: Pierre Wargnye, Anne Flipo, and Dominique Ropion...

The Calvin Klein CKIN2U franchise sees the addition of a new her-and-his duo of fragrances this year with CKIN2U Heat, apparently the most sexually explicit CKIN2U to date. When the original duo was launched sex pheromones were flying around in the air already but they got rapidly cooled down by the term " technosexual" which sounded a little inhuman. The target audience was not pleased...

Calvin Klein is introducing a fresh and green floral twist on the 2005 floral oriental Euphoria called Euphoria Spring Temptation. It is a limited-edition flanker for Springtime 09. The tag line is " Let spring reveal your femininity." To mark the occasion, the bottle was decorated with the rendition of a tropical garden in metallic hues. The perfume, as suggested by the advert, plays on sensations of dewiness featuring notes of guava leaf, pear blossom, a water fall accord, pink lily, freesia and violet petals covered with dew drops, creamy sandalwood, white amber, frosted musk. A 50 ml bottle of Eau de Parfum is priced at 54 €. Source: News Parfums
Amanda Lepore also known as the "#1 transsexual in the world", after becoming a muse for photographer David LaChapelle has turned into a fragrant muse for perfumers as well. First comes the perfume called Amanda by Artware Editions created by perfumer Christopher Laudamiel formerly of International Fragrances and Flavors in collaboration with partner Christopher Hornetz who designed the perfume bottle incrusted with 1000 pieces of Swarowski crystals. "Mr. Laudamiel started with a base of steamed rice, added mandarins,
bergamot, orange flowers, strawberry and cucumber. Fittingly, the
Champagne note is artificial."...

As announced previously, Lanvin is counting on the celebrity-recognition effect of world champion Rafael Nadal to promote their new men's scent called L'Homme Sport by Lanvin. It can be hard sometimes for consumers to orient themselves in the maze of L'Homme and Sport-tagged masculine fragrances so it is almost an obligatory step for companies to choose a unique differentiating element in their advertisements, at least....

This must be our first entry of an Axe fragrance in the new-perfumes category although we have covered them before as part of the teenage-scents body-spray phenomenon and due to their creative ads (and also meant to review a couple of those). This time Axe is taking a slightly different route to seduce men into wearing a fragrance that will be a chick-magnet, and interestingly for this type of very conservative, boyish scents, it is taking the path of the gourmand fragrance, and a muy caliente one at that. Called Dark Temptation the new scent is advertised with the tag line ". ..as irresistible as chocolate." "AXE Dark Temptation is the new fragrance by AXE inspired by what women love most...chocolate.
"AXE Dark Temptation combines the subtle aroma of chocolate with fresh
gourmet scents, including hot chocolate amber and red peppercorn, to
bring modern sophistication to this distinctive fragrance.
So go ahead, try New AXE Dark Temptation and become as irresistible as chocolate!"...

Byredo is not letting up: after the launch of their debut collection of 5 fragrances in the summer of 2008, and the follow-up with Fantastic Man to appear in March 2009, they have also turned to the Paris scene of the Roaring 1920s for inspiration for yet another opus entitled Bal d'Afrique (Ball from Africa). The historical imagery that gave birth to this scent further includes the balls of Saint-Germain-Des-Prés and the Revue Nègre or Bal Nègre led by American-in-Paris Josephine Baker with her paradoxical, unique style made to feel both hieratic - even hieroglyphic - and sinuous... Billed as " the first global scent for Le Labo since their creation", the upcoming Oud 27 to be launched on March 27, 2009 at Colette in Paris is also described as their most sensual composition to date, betraying a definite Oriental bent. For those who are not familiar with Le Labo, their perfumes are usually named after a main raw material, which does not automatically entail that the perfume will be dominated by it. The figure next to the name of the perfumery material is the number of ingredients that went into the jus. Oud 27 also includes notes of Atlas cedar, incense, patchouli, saffron and guaiac wood. (Via Colette newsletter)
The Dutch men's magazine Fantastic Man, "A gentleman's style magazine", has inaugurated a collaboration with niche perfumery newcomer Byredo parfums to create an eponymous scent called Fantastic Man. The composition, an "eau de cologne" is said to be the result of the collaboration between Byredo founder Ben Gorham working together with designer Jop Van Bennekom and journalist Gert Jonkers, the creators of FM. Fantastic Man features notes of bergamot, star aniseed, cardamom, geranium, incense, lavander, vetyver, moss and patchouli. The world-exclusive launch will take place at Colette in Paris, France on March 9, 2009. (Via Colette newsletter)
As announced last year, actress Halle Berry has been working with Coty on developing her signature fragrance. Now the scent called Halle by Halle Berry is set to launch in the spring of 2009. Berry is no newbie to the world of scents. She readily confesses that she likes to blend her own oils, much like Sarah Jessica Parker, calling it " a wonderful form of self-expression." Unlike SJP though, she does not seem to have a favorite super-sexy combination but rather thoroughly enjoys the creative part of it. "For years I have created my own personal scents by mixing and layering fragrances, trying to come up with something unique and different. It's a wonderful form of self-expression and I am thrilled to be working with Coty on my debut fragrance," ...

Update: You can read our reviews of the three colognes Hermès will launch a set of three unisex eaux de cologne in May 2009 called Eau de Pamplemousse Rose (Pink Grapefruit Water), Eau de Gentiane Blanche (White Gentian Water) and Eau d'Orange Verte (Green Orange Water) prolonging the lively cologne revivalist trend spotted last year around the time of the launch of Dior Escale à Portofino. What is new is the upscale branding of these sophisticated eaux de
Cologne on the one hand and on the other hand, sometimes, a desire to
freshen up the genre like François Demachy did for Portofino. With Hermès's new trio of colognes called Les Colognes Hermès, in-house perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena has also decided to pick up the guantlet and offer new interpretations of the classic Kölnish Wasser. The initial Hermès trio collection also builds upon the heritage of Eau d'Orange
Verte which was created in 1979 by perfumer Françoise Caron and can be
considered a classic. She recently created a trio of refined eaux de
cologne for Astier de Villatte and one could see a parallel between that
collection and the new Hermès one....

Sienna Miller at the Elle Style Awards 2009 on Feb 9, 2009 in London, England
According to Vogue UK and Cosmetic News, actress Sienna Miller has been enlisted to become the face of the upcoming Boss Orange by Hugo Boss to be released in July 2009. Touted as " the brand's first ever signature fragrance" it is described in three adjectives by Miller " musky, sweet and sexy". The name of the fragrance is directly borrowed from one of the fashion collections of the design brand "Boss Orange" whose sartorial outlook is summed up thusly...
