Parfums de Nicolaï Les Magnifiques (2008) {New Perfumes}

Les-Magnifiques-Parfums-de-Nicolaï.jpg
Perfumer Patricia de Nicolaï from Parfums de Nicolaï has released a new collection of perfumes called Les Magnifiques. It includes four fragrances in higher concentration forms bottled in more luxurious flacons. The quatuor includes reformulations of three previously issued compositions, Maharanih, Sacrebleu, and Cédrat and a new rose soliflore called Rose Intense (there is a Rose Pivoine in the catalogue).

When offering a new concentration for a perfume, the perfumer has to do more than just add more of the same. She or he needs to re-balance the whole composition and in this case offer an interpretation of intensity that can find support in the addition of new perfume notes meant to convey this idea....

Kimora Lee Simmons launched her third fragrance with Coty under the label Baby Phat following Goddess and Golden Goddess; it is called Fabulosity, a key notion for Simmons and which is also the title of an advice book she has written.

The perfume which is said to be "more explosive and passionate" than the Goddess perfumes was created by perfumer Yann Vasnier of Givaudan. It is described as a fruity oriental with top notes said to be "addictive" and "explosive" (again!) according to Cosmetic World......

Maître Parfumeur et Gantier Bois de Turquie (2008) {Perfume Review & Musings} {New Fragrance}

bois de turquie-Small.jpg

Bois de Turquie is the latest composition by Jean-Paul Millet Lage, the perfumer and owner of Maître Parfumeur et Gantier. It is the first fragrance by the house since 1989 explicitly marketed as a unisex perfume and is classified as a woody aromatic composition. Despite its name which means "Wood(s) of Turkey", its incense-y facet is more important than its woodsy one it seems as here sandalwood is made part of an incense-rich mix. "Woodsy" is a term that can be used in a more figurative sense to designate aromas like vetiver and patchouli and here it applies to patchouli.

A hitherto hidden woody violet note emerges in the end which tilts the balance more in the direction of a woody perfume. Complexity is the name of the game.

The scent aims to bridge the gap between the West and the Orient seeming to do so by resorting to references to an antique historic substratum located in Anatolia while inscribing itself in the Mediterranean geographical continuity.

Inspired by the Millet Lage's travels within Turkey, the scent is a shockingly beautiful fragrance offering both austere and sensual facets with an undercurrent of discreet gourmand notes marked by a religious quality. The beauty of this perfume is such that it is able to provoke a genuine physical aesthetic emotion of poignancy and even suffering in the wearer. One feels strangled at the throat, tears are ready to pour and one attempts not to give in to the strength of one's emotions.

Bois de Turquie perfectly illustrates the difference between what is pretty and pleasing and what is beautiful and more difficult to bear. In the experience of Beauty there is longing and the fear of loss while at the same time there is also the revelation of one's mortality and transiency. I will never be able to stand here for all eternity and drink from the source of this river for my thirst never will quench and the beauty that is contained in this place, person, or scent cannot last because all things and all sensations are meant to disappear.

The perfume shuns exoticism and a classically rendered Orient and prefers to turn to a mythical antique pagan Mediterranean landscape filled with protective deities.

The explicit "unisex" treatment of the perfume can be felt at one level in the contrast between austere, dry and voluptuous notes as mentioned above, but also more deeply, between the opposition and marriage of paternal and maternal principles.....

Mariee_etait_en_noir.jpg

According to the March 2008 issue of Wallpaper (print edition), the house of Creed will release a sequel to Love in White called Love in Black. The perfume is still in its development stages and involves Erwin Creed as well as Olivier Creed. Erwin Creed candidly admits to not having such a great nose but - not to worry regarding the destiny of the house of Creed - to be able to compensate this failing with his creativity: "I'm not the best nose. But I have good ideas." [...] "Chanel No.5 was the result of a mistake, after all....And I have good taste."

(Image: The Bride Wore Black by François Truffaut)

This information is included in an article about three pairs of fathers and sons who are all perfumers: the Creeds, Max and Clément Gavarry, Olivier and Jacques Polge. The
perfume world is known to be steeped in tradition and family transmission still plays a significant role in it. But things are evolving thanks in part to schools like ISIPCA.....

Estee Lauder Sensuous (2008): Away From Florals & Into The Woods {New Fragrance}

Sensuous-Estee-Lauder.jpg

Estee Lauder announced that they will introduce a new feminine fragrance in July of 2008 called Sensuous. The launch is part of a strategic move to renew the brand's perfume portfolio while being in touch with their own tradition of rich ambers inaugurated with Youth-Dew and apparent in Aliage, Azurée, Youth-Dew Amber Nude (recently discontinued).

The new perfume will thus steer clear of their dominant floral category and move into more opulent amber-y and woody territory as woods are becoming increasingly popular in North America and represent an important potential for growth in Europe.....

The new perfume by in-house perfumer-composers Jacques Polge and Christopher Sheldrake is called Sycomore after an earlier Chanel fragrance from 1930.
